Two pilots were killed when an Air Canada Express jet slammed into a fire truck on a LaGuardia runway Sunday night, prompting a full airport shutdown and a joint U.S.–Canada aviation investigation. Flight 8646 from Montreal, carrying 76 people, collided with the vehicle while landing as the truck crossed the tarmac after being cleared to investigate an odor on another aircraft.
Port Authority head Kathryn Garcia confirmed the deaths of the pilot and co-pilot following the crash. More than 40 individuals were transported to hospitals for treatment. LaGuardia Airport remained closed for several hours before officially reopening at 2 p.m. on Monday as federal technical teams began examining the incident.
