Professional golf star Tiger Woods has announced he is stepping away from the sport indefinitely to seek treatment and prioritize his health following his recent DUI arrest and rollover crash in Florida. The 50-year-old athlete shared a statement on X confirming his decision to step back and focus on his well-being.
The announcement comes in the aftermath of a single-car rollover crash in Jupiter Island, Florida. According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, Woods was driving a Land Rover northbound on South Beach Road when his vehicle clipped a trailer being pulled by a pressure-cleaning truck before rolling onto its side. Authorities reported that Woods and the other driver emerged uninjured from the incident.
While a breathalyzer test administered at the scene registered triple zeroes for alcohol, DUI investigators noted that Woods showed signs of impairment potentially linked to medication or drugs. Warrants and police reports later indicated that Woods had two hydrocodone pills in his pocket and told authorities he had looked down at his cellphone and radio right before the collision. Woods subsequently refused to submit to a urinalysis test.
Following the crash, Woods was arrested on charges including misdemeanor driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He was released on bail after spending eight hours in custody. During a subsequent court appearance, an attorney entered a not-guilty plea on behalf of the fifteen-time major champion as he prepares to focus fully on his recovery.
