Santo Domingo - President Luis Abinader and Vice President Raquel Peña led a high-level review of the national development strategy Meta RD 2036 during the 56th Council of Ministers meeting. The session focused on strengthening the coordination and execution of policies designed to transform the country's productive capacity over the next decade, with the aim of delivering measurable improvements in economic growth and citizen welfare.Officials reported advancements across several key sectors outlined in the roadmap. These include the expansion of technical education and STEM scholarships to better align workforce skills with industry demands. In tourism, efforts are advancing to regulate sargassum management and improve vocational training, while the construction sector has benefited from streamlined permitting processes and increased infrastructure investment. The government also highlighted progress in free trade zones through enhanced international promotion and the development of new financing tools, alongside logistics initiatives intended to position the nation as a regional hub. Agricultural programs, including support for avocado exports and new investment funds for coffee and cocoa, were also discussed.Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza emphasized that Meta RD 2036 has become a crucial platform for collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive structural economic transformation. Private sector representatives present at the meeting praised the strategy as an effective and results-oriented partnership.In a separate discussion, the Council addressed potential economic headwinds from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, particularly volatility in global energy markets. Authorities noted the national budget includes a substantial RD$12 billion allocation for fuel subsidies to cushion domestic impact, underscoring the country's strong macroeconomic fundamentals. This review comes as the Dominican Republic receives international recognition for its institutional stability; a recent V-Dem Institute Democracy Report highlighted the nation as one of the few in the world strengthening its democratic systems amid a global decline.
