Eighteen suspects detained in Haiti over the July 2021 assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse were extradited to the United States on Sunday to face federal proceedings in Florida. The group was flown out of Port-au-Prince aboard a military aircraft, according to United States authorities.
US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Jason Reding Quiñones stated that the transfer marks a new phase in the American prosecution of the high-profile case. Quiñones noted that a total of 30 people have now been indicted in the United States in connection with the killing of Moïse, who was gunned down at his private residence by a hired group of military-trained Colombian mercenaries.
Haitian authorities acknowledged that their domestic judicial proceedings regarding the assassination have faced significant delays and have not yet reached trial. Meanwhile, the US proceedings have advanced through arrests, prosecutions, and convictions. Among those previously convicted in a Miami federal court are four men linked to a Florida-based private security firm who faced charges including conspiracy to kill or kidnap Moïse.
US federal prosecutors and FBI special agents emphasized that investigations into the transnational plot remain active. Officials stated they will continue to pursue individuals involved in financing, facilitating, or supporting the assassination, signaling that further legal actions are expected as the broader case proceeds through American courts.
