Defending champions Mount Pleasant FA kept their Concacaf Caribbean Cup hopes alive with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over reigning Jamaica Premier League champions Portmore United at the National Stadium in Kingston on Wednesday. The crucial Group B encounter provided Mount Pleasant with their first win of the campaign, elevating their standings and breathing new life into their tournament journey.
The decisive moment arrived in the 40th minute when Mount Pleasant captain Daniel Green capitalized on a rebound. Goalkeeper Daviegh Payton initially parried a long-range effort from Nickalia Fuller directly into the path of Green, who slotted home calmly into an unprotected net to break the deadlock. Despite holding the lead, Mount Pleasant head coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore admitted he remained concerned about his squad's ongoing wastefulness in front of goal after failing to extend their advantage.
Late drama unfolded on the pitch when Payton received a straight red card in the 80th minute. The Portmore goalkeeper rushed out of the 18-yard box to handle the ball, preventing Warner Brown from seizing a clear goalscoring opportunity. Playing the remainder of the match with ten men, Portmore could not find an equalizer, despite a late scoring chance stopped near the goal line by Mount Pleasant goalkeeper Shaquan Davis.
The victory lifted Mount Pleasant to four points, placing them in joint second position in Group B alongside Cibao FC and just one point behind group leaders Salcedo FC. Meanwhile, Portmore United dropped further down the table following their first defeat of the group stage.
